Art & ai
2024
My art practice is informed by my engagement with the philosophy of technology, particularly as it relates to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its intersection with art, culture, and society. I approach my work as a conceptual investigation into the creative, ethical, and social dimensions of AI, which I explore through the medium of AI generative imaging. My practice goes beyond experimentation with digital tools; it functions as a critical examination of the relationship between technology and human creativity, art history, and the production of cultural objects. In this context, my constantly evolving methodology responds to the technological advances that are reshaping both the art world and the wider human experience.
At the heart of my work is an exploration of how AI, as a technological force, interacts with long-standing artistic traditions and human cultural production. By integrating AI into my creative process, I question how technological tools challenge traditional notions of authorship, originality, and the role of the artist. In contrast to the historical understanding of art as a human-centered activity based on manual skill, intention, and emotional expression, my methodology foregrounds the interplay between human and machine, raising critical questions about the extent to which AI can replicate, augment, or even replace human creative practices.
My engagement with generative imaging is not simply a technical exercise, but a conceptual strategy that opens new avenues for questioning the role of technology in the formation of cultural objects and ideas. I recognize that AI, far from being a neutral tool, is embedded with cultural, ethical, and philosophical implications that influence both the creation and reception of art. By critically examining the outputs generated by AI, I invite viewers to reflect on how machines interpret human input and ideas, and how this process of interpretation affects the meaning and value of the resulting work.
This evolving methodology also allows me to engage with art history in new and innovative ways. AI's ability to analyze and generate images based on vast datasets of art historical material creates an opportunity to explore how the aesthetic and conceptual frameworks of the past might be reimagined in light of contemporary technological advances. My work critically examines whether AI, with its reliance on pattern recognition and data processing, can ever fully grasp the nuances of human artistic intent beyond merely mimicking and reconfiguring pre-existing forms in ways that lack true creative agency.
By positioning AI as a collaborator in the creative process, I also address the ethical dimensions of technological innovation. My work explores the implications of AI-generated art for questions of ownership, intellectual property, and the potential commodification of creativity. In doing so, I raise important ethical concerns about the broader societal impacts of AI: Who controls these technologies? Who benefits from their use? What are the potential consequences for the artist, the viewer, and the art market as AI becomes more integrated into the production of cultural goods?
My methodology thus serves as a critical platform for exploring the complex relationship between AI and the world of ideas. Combining technological experimentation with philosophical inquiry, I demonstrate how AI can serve as both a tool and a subject of artistic reflection, offering new perspectives on how technology shapes human thought and culture. My work challenges us to rethink the boundaries between human and machine, art and technology, creation and reproduction, while emphasizing the need for ongoing critical engagement with the ethical and social implications of AI in contemporary society.
Finally, my art practice reflects a sophisticated engagement with the technological transformations that are reshaping the landscape of contemporary art. Through my use of AI-generated imagery, I not only critique the limits and possibilities of machine creativity, but also interrogate the deeper philosophical and ethical questions raised by the integration of AI into human cultural production. Ultimately, my work offers a compelling argument for the importance of critically examining the role of technology in the creation of art, and how these advances may shape the future of both artistic practice and cultural understanding.
