Readymades According to What develops from a long-standing interest in repetition, quotation, reconstruction and the unstable authority of images. Its title carries an explicit debt to Jasper Johns, while extending the question “according to what?” into a technological field in which images are increasingly interpreted, completed and reformulated by computational systems. What once functioned as an epistemological doubt now returns as an operational condition: according to which file, which model, which prompt, which previous image, which software generation, which act of selection? Across works begun in the 1990s and re-entered under later technologies, recursion becomes a critical method rather than a stylistic effect. Generative Fill and Generative Expand are used not simply to produce alternatives, but to test how one image-system reads another, how an earlier digital object survives technological succession, and how machine inference reorganises the histories embedded within a work. The readymade here is neither merely found nor merely generated. It is discovered recursively, through successive acts of interpretation in which certainty gives way to a more provisional order of evidence.
