’Pataphysical Reality Co., names a group of works begun after 2023 through the reworking of earlier Photoshop files with generative AI tools. They are not fantasy, science fiction, or AI surrealism. They are attempts to construct feasible pictures of reality by technically improbable means. Their interest lies in the moment when an image appears to contain two different historical times at once, yet still coheres as a possible world. The result is not invention, not documentation, and not restoration, but a reality-discovery produced through error, prediction, memory, and painterly judgement.
Since 2023, Fudge have been reopening earlier Photoshop files and submitting them to Photoshop’s generative tools, not to escape reality but to test how reality now returns through prediction.
These works are not fantasies, science fictions, surrealist inventions, or examples of generative style. They are attempts to construct pictures that remain answerable to the real, even when the method by which they arrive there is technically improbable, historically unstable, or visibly wrong. The image is not asked to dream. It is asked to continue.
Many of the source files began years earlier as PSDs: layered, interrupted, unresolved digital paintings or photographic constructions made within an older technological regime. When reworked through generative AI, they acquire a strange double temporality. The old file persists as an archaeological ground; the new tool arrives as a predictive weather system. Occasionally, something occurs that is neither restoration nor fabrication: the image seems to contain two distinct periods at once, yet remains coherent as a possible world.
This is the point at which the work begins.
